WTIU Public Television
WTIU is 24-hour public television licensed to Indiana University, operating out of the Radio and TV Center on the Bloomington, Indiana campus. The station serves over 20 counties in west and south-central Indiana, including the cities of Bloomington, Bedford, Columbus, and Terre Haute, and the communities of Martinsville, Linton, Bloomfield, Nashville, Spencer, and Seymour. Approximately 175,000 TV households are included in the viewing area, cable and off-air combined.
Over 100 Indiana University students, from IU’s Department of Telecommunications, School of Journalism, and many other disciplines, complement their academic training and develop marketable skills through real-world experience gained by working alongside the station’s professional staff.
WTIU’s broadcast schedule combines the full national schedule of PBS programs with additional locally selected series and programs. This includes series like Antiques Roadshow, NOVA, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, Masterpiece, Mystery!, and The American Experience. Our children’s programming has well-known shows like Teletubbies, Sesame Street, and Arthur. The PBS lineup also includes many how-to series like This Old House and The Victory Garden.
Locally-produced programs include daily news breaks and a weekly magazine program covering local people, places, and events, The Weekly Special. There are a number of programs currently in production. The Friday Zone, WTIU’s own weekly Emmy Award-winning children’s program, features activities and guests including performance and visual artists, scientists, and literary figures. Third House hosts members of Indiana’s General Assembly for interactive legislative forums.
Recent local documentaries include Restoring the Legend: The French Lick Springs Hotel, Spanning Time: America’s Covered Bridges, Doc Counsilman: Making Waves, Columbus, Indiana: Different by Design, the Emmy Award-winning Sugarplum Dreams: Staging The Nutcracker Ballet, and West Baden Springs: Save of the Century, and the Our Town series.
