What is Podcasting?
Podcasting is a way of publishing audio and video broadcasts via the internet. Specifically, podcasts are feeds (such as RSS feeds) that contain digital audio or video files, such as MP3 files. Users can subscribe to feeds using software that periodically checks for and downloads new content automatically. This software is available on the web and is generally free; here is a sampling of available programs (please note, we do not endorse or guarantee any particular software program):
For Windows/PC: iTunes, iPodder, Doppler, Blog Matrix Sparks!
For Mac: iTunes, iPodderX, Playpod
Once you subscribe to a podcast, you can either listen to/watch it on your computer or transfer it to a portable MP3 player, such as an iPod.
What is RSS?
RSS feeds are free updated content sent to your computer via the Internet (RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication). The feeds usually contain headlines, article summaries, and links to full articles.
To subscribe to RSS feeds, you need to use a program called a news reader, or aggregator; there are dozens of news readers available, and many are offered free of charge. Some readers are available as desktop software that you download and install on your computer. Others are web-based readers that you can access on the internet. Both Google and About.com offer directories of news readers. The reader you choose will have instructions for how to subscribe to RSS feeds.
