I-69 Ceremony 'Invitation-Only'
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held later this month for the I-69 extension project, but officials are keeping the details secret to keep protesters from disrupting the ceremony. A group called Hoosier Voices for I-69 is planning the event by invitation-only. The first segment of the highway linking Indianapolis and Evansville is being built in southwest Indiana.
Petition Could Overturn Hospital Merger
More than two-thirds majority of the Local Council of Women voted in favor of the merger between Bloomington Hospital and Clarian. Now a petition is being circulated about how the June 16th vote on the hospital was taken. The petition requests the board call a special membership meeting to discuss overturning the vote. The petition needs 10-percent approval.
Assistance Program Helps Neighborhood
The aftermath of the recent floods have not been pretty, but there are some success stories. Candlelight Village in Columbus is one of them. 150 manufactured homes along with vehicles and personal property were swept away, but the property manager, Hanover Group, worked quickly to pave the way for a full recovery. After an extensive clean-up, an assistance program is now available to place flood victims back into new, affordable homes.
State Funds Opens Door to Federal Dollars
The state is kicking in $50 million dollars to help trigger federal matching funds for Hoosier farmers affected by June's record floods. The money will help restore severely eroded farmland. The money will be administered through local banks that provide low interest loans to farmers. The program will cost the state just over a million dollars in lost interest, but could net farmers up to $200 million in federal grants.
Deep-Fried Cheesecake Featured at State Fair
What will be the new deep-fried-on-a-stick treat at the Indiana State Fair this year? Out of more than 27-hundred online votes, Monica Urick's deep-fried bananas foster cheesecake garnered 861, well ahead of the second-place finisher, a hickory-smoked pulled-pork sandwich. This year's deep-fried cheesecake dessert will sell for around 4 bucks.
