Be More Involved!
WTIU is viewer-supported public television, and one of the most valuable donations that can be made is the gift of time. The station relies on a wide variety of volunteers throughout the year ranging from students to retirees. If you have the time, we have a need you can fill. Read on for more information about the many volunteer opportunities available around the station. Sign up now!
Phone Volunteer FAQ
If your business or organization has volunteered to answer phones during one of our fund drives, see our list of Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
Thanks to Our Volunteers!
Thank you to everyone who generously donated their support during our recent membership campaign. Viewer support allows this public television station to deliver uninterrupted quality programming throughout the year and we sincerely appreciate the generosity of our members.
The participation of dedicated volunteers is also a critical part of our success. We are proud to list the individuals and organizations who graciously offered their time and talent to the campaign. In addition, several restaurants generously donated food and refreshments for our volunteers and staff, and we gratefully list those restaurants here as well. If you frequent any of these businesses, please take a moment to thank them for their support of WTIU.
If you didn’t become a member during the recent campaign, but would still like to do so, you can visit the membership section of our web site to make a secure donation, or call (812) 855-6114 or (800) 662-3311.
Benefits of volunteering
As a WTIU volunteer, you get a chance to:
- participate in fun activities
- meet other viewers and community members
- get a behind-the-scenes look at how the station works
- have the satisfaction of supporting the station in a personal way
- students can count their work as community service hours
- local organizations can show their involvement with the community
Time commitment
Volunteer opportunities usually require a block of several hours on an as-needed basis. We need some volunteers every month of the year, and a large number of volunteers during our three yearly fund drives in March, August, and December.
Get your organization involved
Our fund drives have traditionally been a way for local non-profit organizations and student groups to show their support of public television and their involvement with the community. During our fund raising hours, we need groups of four to six people to answer pledge calls from viewers. Your organization will be given on-air credit during the fund drive, and also in follow-up publications. If you request it, we can sometimes schedule your organization to appear during live pledge breaks, giving you more visibility. For more information, call the Membership office at (812) 855-6114 or (800) 662-3311, or fill out this on-line sign-up form.
Volunteer tasks
Clerical
The Membership and Programming offices frequently rely on clerical support from volunteers.
Guide mailings
Some time after the 25th of each month, we mail copies of each stations program guide. We rely on volunteers to stick labels on each of the almost 9000 guides by hand! Time commitment of 3-4 hours during weekday mornings, once per month. Sign up now!
Letter mailings
Occasionally (around the time of our fund drives) we need help mailing large quantities of letters. This job may include matching names, collating items, and stuffing envelopes. Time commitment of a couple of hours during weekday business hours, a few times a year. Sign up now!
Community Advisory Board
The WTIU Community Advisory Board assists WTIU in fulfilling its mission to inform, inspire, educate and entertain its audiences. Advisory Board members strive to do this by representing various constituencies among the 20+ counties that WTIU serves, monitoring and evaluating programs, giving voice to underserved populations, serving as a sounding board for ideas presented by WTIU staff, and bringing issues of community concern to the attention of station management.
If you're interested in volunteering for the WTIU Community Advisory Board, a short note is all that's required. Just tell us a little about yourself, why you'd like to be a part of this group, and the best way to get in touch with you. Correspondence should be addressed to Phil Meyer, WTIU Station Manager, 1229 East Seventh Street, Bloomington, IN 47405; or by e-mail to pwmeyer@indiana.edu.
Fund raising
Answering pledge phones
WTIU holds three yearly fund drives in March, August, and December, and we rely on volunteers to answer calls during our hours spent pledging. Volunteers assist callers in making pledges by following instructions on a form. WTIU staff will train volunteers prior to their taking calls. Time commitment of a block of several hours, three times a year. Sign up now!
Production support
Telecommunications and other qualified students may be assigned to the station's operational areas for television production support. Volunteer service is often considered in applications for employment, and this is a great way to get hands-on experience working with equipment, senior students, and staff. Time commitment of at least 4 hours a week, Monday - Thursday, or as needed. Sign up now!
Special events and other jobs
The station also needs volunteer assistance for special projects. These activities and events include the WTIU Kids Club Ice Cream Social, National Kids Day celebration, gift wrapping items, mailing large volumes of packages, and other things as they occur. Time commitment of a few hours on an as-needed basis. Sign up now!
