Chuck Carney
Former WTIU News Director
After nearly eight years as WTIU News Director, Chuck Carney has moved to a communications position in the Indiana University School of Education. He will still be seen on WTIU in archived Weekly Special segments and the occasional Membership Campaign.
Chuck came to WTIU in February 1999 as News Director. Prior to joining WTIU, he was Assistant News Director at WUFT-TV, the PBS affiliate in Gainesville, Florida. Chuck jumped into public broadcasting after spending much of his career as a commercial television reporter and anchor. Chuck served as a sports anchor for KFSM-TV (CBS) in Fort Smith, Arkansas and KHOG-TV (ABC) in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Since joining WTIU, Chuck’s work has earned a regional Edward R. Murrow award from the Radio Television News Director’s Association (RTNDA) and state awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and Indiana Broadcasters Association. The Arkansas and Oklahoma Associated Press have also awarded him honors. Chuck heads the Indiana University student chapter of RTNDA and has been chosen for panels at the RTNDA national convention the last two years. He holds a Master's degree in Journalism from the University of Arkansas.
Chuck lives in Bloomington with his wife, Connie, and daughter Claire. He also does some freelance writing. Chuck has played piano since he was six years old, and says he would have become a music major if he hadn't gone into journalism while in college. A southerner for most of his life, he's now getting used to harsher winters. Chuck's family loves the hills of southern Indiana, and especially enjoys the fall leaves of Brown County.
