Research & Creative Activity

This array of images depicts some of Robert Shakespeare's lighting design projects, which have been used to investigate the usefulness of photoaccurate computer visualizations in a variety of contexts. The geometric shapes in the lower left corner of the back cover show the inventory of primitives used to construct each of the three dimensional scenes. The images in the middle of both the back and front cover show the interface developed to enable arts students to easily interact with this powerful computer-simulation environment. The NationsBank in Atlanta on the right of the front cover is a lighting study used to evaluate the aesthetic and environmental impact of giant structures, such as a skyscraper. Shakespeare is the lighting designer for the Department of Theatre and Drama, head of the M.F.A. Lighting Design Program, and directs the Theatre Computer Visualization Center.
