AB: Schools, with the assistance of parents and teachers, frequently gang up on children in the service of what they believe is a neutral, objective idea of how a child ought to behave, look, dress, learn, and be. Children, in turn, learn how to live within these supposedly neutral norms, and may grow up to enforce these same rules upon their offspring, students, and family members. In B. Cleary's "Ramona" books (1968, 1975, 1981, 1984), Ramona Quimby's trajectory from "Ramona the Pest" to "Ramona Forever" seems positive. The books tell the story of an initially willful and often unhappy child who, through frequent mishaps and firm teacherly correction, learns that pulling hair is always a bad idea, and that she cannot expect everyone to see and do everything her way. Ramona evolves into someone Roberta (her new baby sister) can safely emulate and pester, as Ramona herself pestered older sister Beezus. In short, Ramona is wised up and much happier by the end of "Ramona Forever" than she was in the earlier installments of her saga, when she was diagnosed as having "poor self-control" and a "negative desire for attention." Ramona's scholastic trials, however, can be seen less as ordinary (harmless) rites of passage than as ubiquitous (but traumatic) examples of the ways schools function to normalize and homogenize their subjects. Ramona is seen as moving from one wounding experience to another as she learns how to get by and do exactly what is expected of her with half her brain while daydreaming with the other half. (NKA)

AB: A teacher used classics of children's literature to teach critical reading skills. Although scoring above the national average on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), the teacher's fourth-grade gifted students exhibited problems with critical reading skills. A literature unit involving whole language strategies and using Beverly Cleary's "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" and E. B. White's "Charlotte's Web" was implemented. Students kept literature logs while reading and engaged in classroom discussions using questioning techniques designed to develop critical thinking skills. Vocabulary instruction focused on using context clues in the stories to determine word meaning. Students did research on spiders in cooperative learning groups, created a "fact vs. opinion" bulletin board on pigs, and used creative writing to evaluate situations and recommend solutions from a pig's point of view. Students demonstrated higher level thinking skills and became problem solvers. Students' scores on the ITBS increased remarkably as a class, but bilingual students' increases were a disappointment. AB: Books that remind children and adolescents that writing is fun and that they can be writers not only confirm the reading/writing connection, but also demonstrate that reading can be a springboard to writing. Writing and receiving letters is very exciting to beginning readers, and there are many picture books that provide examples of how to write a letter, what to include, and how a person can organize his/her thoughts. "The Jolly Postman, Or, Other People's Letters" by Janet and Allan Ahlberg, "Frog and Toad Are Friends" by Arnold Lobel, and "Letter to Amy" by Ezra Jack Keats, for example, illustrate some of the purposes of writing with which young children are familiar: to express thanks and appreciation, to issue an invitation, and to express the writer's feelings. Bruce Brooks' "The Moves Make the Man" shows two adolescent boys advocating writing as a worthwhile activity, not something to be confined to school assignments. In this story, the reader is told what "equipment" is needed for writing, and that writing is an effective vehicle for sorting out thoughts, and for telling a story. Other stories such as "Dicey's Song" by Cynthia Voight and "Dear Mr. Henshaw" by Beverly Cleary illustrate that getting a response is another prime reason for writing. And Lois Lowry's "Rabble Starkey" teaches students how to improve their own writing by using a thesaurus. These and other books are good models for reminding students that writing is fun. (PRA)

AB: Many schools expect teachers to act as curriculum clerks, carrying out decisions about subject matter and classroom management. A promising new metaphor for professional educators is that of teacher as explorer, the leader of an expedition into unfamiliar territory. The image of explorer changes the perspective on teaching goals and roles and frees instructors to consider new alternatives and traditions which promote exciting practices in the classroom. A classroom illustration demonstrates the theoretical underpinnings and practical possibilities of the "explorer" metaphor. In this classroom students first wrote with a partner about a main character in "Dear Mr. Henshaw" to describe what they thought she was like and to jot down questions they had about her. Following that activity, students reflected independently on the written conversation process, noting what they had learned, questions they still had, and general reactions to the experience. By validating and extending student responses, the teacher can increase their sophistication with language and literature, and make the journey into literature an exploration of life itself. AB: A study conducted in the Orange County Public Schools in central Florida investigated the reading interests of sixth-grade students. The study also gathered information from teachers regarding the nature and source of reading materials used for independent reading in their classrooms and on the implementation of sustained silent reading practices. Thirty-seven reading teachers completed a two-page survey, and 279 students completed a one-page survey. Results showed that students were most interested in mysteries, adventure, and "scary" stories. Favorite authors were Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, and Stephen King. Teachers reported that independent reading is a significant part of the sixth-grade reading program. The study revealed, however, that approximately 48% of the teachers provided half or more of the materials used during independent reading periods from personal funds. AB: Many gifted children enter kindergarten already reading and in need of reading instruction that is different from the regular program. A reading program for gifted youngsters that is literature-based will help develop comprehension skills at the highest cognitive levels and will also foster the desire to read. Beginning with the interpretation of illustrations in wordless picture books and continuing with print material, children can identify story themes (main ideas), predict plot outcomes, and define characters and setting. Possibilities for developing sequencing skills inclu
DE: (1) putting the main points on cards, arranging them in order; (2) outlining/telling what happens through creative drama; and (3) using a flannel board and cutouts. Frequent questioning helps children to develop a viewpoint, to analyze characterization and to evaluate various elements in the story. Children with more advanced conceptual development and background can deal with books with more complicated plot structure, such as Beverly Cleary's "Dear Mr. Henshaw" or Natalie Babbitt's "Tuck Everlasting." Students should be encouraged to keep their own journals, an activity that increases language skills and self-understanding. The activities of comparison/contrast may be used advantageously with books by the same author or in series, or with books with similar elements. Book discussion groups are particularly effective when used with gifted children, but care should be taken never to scrutinize, dissect, or analyze until reading literature loses its appeal as an enjoyable lifelong activity. AB: Specialists in the field of children's literature, who publish research and decide on awards for individual books, should give serious study to what children themselves choose to read. Among the children's books that were not originally awarded top honors by critics but that have proved extremely popular with children are the Oz books by L. Frank Baum, "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White, and the Henry Huggins Books written by Beverly Cleary. Donald J. Sobol's books about Encyclopedia Brown, a boy detective, are bestsellers that have also received acceptance by critics; one of the world's all-time bestsellers is the series about Tintin, also a boy detective, that was created by the Belgian cartoonist Herge (Georges Remi). Childhood's heroes are important, and no study of children's literature is adequate that focuses on the prestigious to the exclusion of the popular. (GW)
