AB: Intended as an aid to primary school teachers, this handbook presents a literature unit based on the children's book, "The Cat in the Hat" (Dr. Seuss). It begins with sample lesson plans, a unit planner, getting to know the book and author, and suggestions for using the unit activities. Next, a section offers unit activities focusing on unit management, including a rainy day bulletin board, and reading folders. The handbook then presents a section of unit activities focusing on language arts, including pocket chart rhyme card patterns, story questions, stick puppet patterns and activity ideas, context clues, and a reading wheel. AB: A family literacy program was developed for families containing young children and learning-challenged adults whose limited reading skills made it impossible for them to read aloud to their children. The program's primary objective was to upgrade the parents' reading skills and knowledge of children's literature. The program was staffed by a literacy coordinator, reading instructor, and paraprofessional and was targeted toward parents currently enrolled at the Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Center in Erie, Pennsylvania. The program was designed for a class of no more than 15 parents. Each of the 20 class meetings held between December 1993 and April 1994 was organized around a specific theme and included oral reading sessions and theme-related activities. According to the project staff, parent participants not only became aware of the benefits of reading to their children but also achieved significant gains in sight vocabulary, oral reading skills, reading comprehension, and self-esteem. AB: A study investigated to what extent average middle school students were able to perceive the social issues embedded in literature by Dr. Seuss. Seventy-four seventh-grade students responded to five Dr. Seuss stories in free-writing exercises, response worksheets, and question worksheets. Results showed that the majority of students (approximately 85%) discovered the major issues in the five stories: "The Sneetches"; "The Lorax"; "The Butter Battle Book"; "Horton Hears a Who"; and "The Cat in the Hat." Some students were able to delve more deeply into the social aspects depicted, but most at least recognized the social implications of each story, and related both personal and general ideas, showing that response was not only of a self-centered nature.
