AB: Offering 16 essays by presenters at the first Middle School Mosaic (held in Detroit, Michigan, in 1997), this book connects the themes of literacy, reflective practice, and the special characteristics of middle level teaching. In the first section, Literature and Literacy at the Middle Level, the authors examine questions of literacy by looking at ways to improve reading, broaden the definitions of literacy and literature, and address important issues through choices of literature. In the second section, Reflective Practice in the Middle, the authors focus on ways in which teachers can learn more about themselves, their students, and the ways to support students so that students can, in turn, learn more about themselves and each other. The writers in the third section, The Nature and Needs of Students at the Middle Level, give readers a glimpse of middle level concerns and address the needs of both middle level students as they struggle with who they are, and educators as they struggle with the day-to-day growth of their students and provide a learning environment conducive to a population in transition. Essays in the book are: (1) "When Reading Is Stupid: The Why, How, and What To Do about It" (Jeffrey D. Wilhelm); (2) "From Hall Talk to Classroom Talk to Book Talk: Helping Struggling Readers Connect to Reading" (Kylene Beers); (3) "Teaching Literature through Thematic Units" (Mary Santerre); (4) "Nonfiction and Young Readers" (Robert C. Small, Jr.); (5) "Literature and Lessons of the Holocaust: Theory and Practice" (Marlene B. AB: This paper traces the apparent disillusionment of current American society as attributed to alleged misguided values and the neglect of effective citizenship education. Acknowledging that the schools' attempts at values education have encountered problems, this is still a mission of social studies education. The paper examines the spirit of heroism as an important step in teaching/promoting the values of effective citizenship and promotes utilizing the depth and accuracy of commercial trade books to supplement the limited conventional textbook. Six selected trade books by Milton Meltzer and Russell Freedman note the commonality and continuity of values demonstrated by six "traditional" American heroes. Contains 14 notes and 4 references. AB: In "Kids at Work," Russell Freedman explores the world of child labor during the years 1908-1918 when Lewis Hine, "teacher-crusader," worked as an investigative photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). Hine's writing and the photos he gathered from across the country revealed a "shocking reality that most Americans had never seen before." Russell Freedman's intertwining of three distinct sources of information - facts, photographs, and the focused experience of a single individual - provides readers with the basis for compassionate imagining, a blending of both knowing and caring about the past. Freedman uses storytelling techniques such as vivid, detailed scenes; characters developed through the use of small but "telling" details; and personal anecdotes. Readers cannot fail to be moved by the numerous photographs taken by Lewis Hine. Using "direct eye" contact with the observer, Hine showed viewers the conditions under which children worked in mills, canneries, mines, farms, and factories. "Kids at Work" focuses on children's quality of life as a result of industrialization in the United States. Freedman helps bridge compassionate imagining with contemporary concern - child labor has not vanished from America. It exists today in children of recent immigrants and migrant farm workers.
