AB: This book offers ideas, activities, and resources to assist teachers in designing a curriculum to help elementary students reach a better understanding of science, its nature, and content. The integrated units are resources upon which to build interdisciplinary lessons. This book contains 21 chapters, each built around a work of fictional children's literature. The books selected have strong science themes that can become the basis of science activities as well as other activities in related areas such as social studies, humanities, arts and mathematics. The book is divided into three major areas: (1) "Life Sciences," which studies individual life-forms as well as the ecology of plants and animals; (2) "Earth and Space Sciences," which studies weather, soil and rocks, the planet Earth, the solar system, and the universe; and (3) "Physical Science and Technology," which looks at force, work, energy, sound, music, wind, and flight. Activities are hands-on in nature and also include crossword puzzles, math puzzles, suggestions for art projects, word searches, and outdoor activities. Authors of the children's books upon which these units are based include Robert McCloskey ("One Morning in Maine"), Judi Barrett ("Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs"), Jan Brett (Berlioz the Bear), and Virginia Lee Burton ("Katy and the Big Snow").
