AB: Middle school students can become fascinated with literature if they have a choice in selecting which trade book to read and the means of revealing comprehension. One student teacher (ST) developed a bulletin board to stimulate learner interest in reading for her sixth grade students. "Read and Digest" was the heading, with four illustrations showing a student reading, travel scenes, historical figures, and four new book jackets which overlapped. Using the book "Cassie Binegar" (Patricia MacLachlan), the ST discussed the bulletin board with the class and told related trade book content for each illustration. The ST mentioned that she would like to use a seminar method to discuss the book in depth, and she explained this method to the four students who had volunteered to read the book. The four students, when asked if they had enjoyed the book, responded in the affirmative. They were enthusiastic and ready to share and analyze ideas contained in the book. The open discussion between the ST and the students used brainstorming effectively - 33 responses were provided by learners as to how the heroine of the novel might have resolved her feelings about the house her family lived in. The group of students finished off their discussion by writing a "diamante." (NKA)

AB: Because a teacher who demonstrates a love of literature and reading is a valuable model for children, a study determined the knowledge of children's and adolescent literature of students enrolled in a graduate reading methods course. A questionnaire entitled "What's Your Literature Quotient?" was administered to 72 teachers concerning knowledge of Newbery-Award-winning books and 126 teachers were surveyed concerning knowledge of Caldecott-Award-winning books. Subjects were asked to identify a book's title based on a brief descriptive phrase. Results indicated that 108 of the 126 respondents (85.7%) correctly identified "Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears," and 51 of the 72 respondents (70.8%) correctly identified "Sarah, Plain and Tall." The two questionnaires and compilations of data (indicating the rank ordering of titles receiving correct responses) are attached. (RS)

AB: A study examined similarities and differences between adults' and children's responses to the same children's book, and the role of discussion in shaping adults' perceptions about the book and their understanding of children's responses. Subjects, 129 students in five university children's literature classes, read and responded in writing to Patricia MacLachlan's "Sarah, Plain and Tall." Students collected verbal and/or written responses from 140 children in grades 3-8 as the child read or listened to the book. The college students then engaged in group discussion about the book and completed an open-ended questionnaire. Results indicated that: (1) initial responses by both children and adults were more reader-based rather than text-based; (2) children tended to take the book more at "face value" and read for enjoyment; (3) children identified more with the child characters; (4) boys were less enthusiastic than girls about the book; (5) by far the most responses from children related to the characters; (6) child readers made few comments about themes; and (7) children made comments demonstrating awareness of the author's crafting of the story. Results also indicated that class discussions were important for adult readers' responses to the book in eliciting more text-based responses; the nature of the discussion influenced adults' insights; and discussion was important to adults' understanding of the children's responses. Findings suggest that discussion is important to bring out readers' analytical stance. (Contains 15 references and a table listing coding categories.) (RS)
