AB: Intended for teachers, this workbook uses 20 well-known children's books as models to teach expository and narrative writing skills. The workbook teaches students about brainstorming, focus, organization, elaboration, and writing conventions with readily-available quality children's literature, such as "When I Was Young in the Mountains," "Scrabble Creek," "Owl Moon," "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day," and "Ira Sleeps Over." Using the techniques of good writers as models, the workbook takes teacher and students step-by-step through each component of the writing workshop mini-lesson - each lesson proceeds through a mini-lesson with specific language, models, examples, and pre-written charts. A primary and intermediate level lesson for each selection in the workbook make it easy to match the mini-lesson with the readiness level of students. Teachers can build skill mastery in their students by using the mini-lessons in the order they are presented in the workbook, or pick and choose to suit their own programs. The workbook has been classroom tested by teachers. (NKA)

Rodriguez, Deborah Chandra, Paul Janeczko, Michael Spooner, Constance Levy, Nikki Giovanni, Patricia Hubbell, Victor Martinez, Lucille Clifton, Maxine Kumin, Judith Thurman, and Nancy White Carlstrom. AB: This paper is a bio-bibliography of Cynthia Rylant, exploring both her life and writings. The biography examines events in her life which have led to her development as a critically and internationally acclaimed children's author, with special emphasis placed on her childhood, since so many of her works have been inspired by her memories of those early years. Biographical and autobiographical materials published through February 1993 have been used. The bibliography, which includes all of her materials published in the United States through December 1992 (33 titles), is annotated; prominent awards or honors and selective reviews are included. The literature review supports Cynthia Rylant as an author destined to become a classic children's author and well-deserving of in-depth study. (Contains 16 references.) (Author)

AB: This teacher's handbook, organized in two parts, gives theoretical support for integrating social studies and literature disciplines and serves as an instructional guide for classroom use. Part 1, "Children's Literature in the Social Studies Curriculum," provides a philosophical background for integrating social studies and whole language across the curriculum through thematic units based on children's literature. Practical suggestions are given for implementation of the approach. Part 2, "Activities and Processes," organizes lessons by the seven major areas of the social studies curriculum: child/self; family; community/neighborhood; city/country; states/regions; nation/country; and world. Focused on these themes, lesson activities are designed for each of 32 children's books. Examples of the books inclu

Each presentation includes a summary, social studies topics, content-related words, curricular perspectives, critical-thinking questions, related books and references, and activities. Appendices include an annotated bibliography of children's literature and social studies resources. An index and information about the author conclude the book. (MM)

AB: Reading comprehension is much more than a decoding of the printed words on the page; it is, rather, a complex interaction between readers and their personal past experiences as they relate to the text. A connection between the text and past experiences of the readers can stimulate expectations about the text. Facilitating these links presupposes a careful review of appropriate children's literature. Two books particularly suited to calling up memories in the reader are "Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge" by Mem Fox and "When I Was Young in the Mountains" by Cynthia Rylant. Teachers can generate a list of words representing key concepts from such books. Students then make their own predictions about the story's plot. After reading the story, these predictions are compared with the author's intended message. Students choose one of their own memories to use as a focus for personal narratives. These writings are first shared in peer-response groups and then the teacher responds to the writings. An analytical scale is used for assessing the writing. Such a scale guides a purposeful dialogue between student and teacher and eases the student through the process of revision. (The analytical scale is attached.) (RS)

AB: A survey of books for young people reveals that some of the best (and even award-winning) novels deal with the controversial issue of religion. Although most of these books deal with religion only in the background, some clearly present this issue in the forefront. One book, Cynthia Rylant's "A Fine White Dust" (1986), traces a religious quest. In this story the reader sees a young man, at the end of the seventh grade, making a revival which will change his life. The pattern is a rather common one - when religion is portrayed as a sincere faith or relationship with God, it is usually seen as a positive benefit. When churches or religious leaders are portrayed, their image is often negative, as seen in "Is That You, Miss Blue?" by M. E. Kerr. Organized religion as experienced in a religious school is a sham compared to the true religious experience of the heroine. "Beyond the Chocolate War" (1985) by Robert Cormier and "Tree by Leaf" (1988) by Cynthia Voight are representative of novels that depict the suffering of religious people in their quest for personal meaning. These and other books show the hunger for God and the search for spiritual meaning in life present in young people today, and, as such, are worthy of study. (A list of 10 religious books for adolescents is attached.) (KEH)
