DE: Content-Analysis; Critical-Reading; Elementary-Secondary-Education; Locus-of-Control; Novels-
AB: A study used three Newbery books - "The Voyages of Dr. Doolittle (Lofting, 1922), "Charlotte's Web" (White, 1952), and "Maniac Magee" (Spinelli, 1990) - to examine three female characters identified in these books in the role of rescuer, accentuating their commonalities and differences within Jungian and feminist theory in literary criticism. Since many research studies cite locus of control as the determining factor in school achievement and retention rates, initially a coding scheme was developed using locus of control as the conceptual framework. In a larger content analysis, 140 fictional Newbery protagonists were classified into eight categories which collapsed into internal and external locus of control. The books were read by two readers, and notes were taken separately by each. A progressive process of reading, taking notes, and pattern sorting was used to analyze these female characters. The most striking commonality among the three characters is that all represent the archetypical Mother, although none were biologically related to the protagonists. Polynesia, the parrot, in "Dr. Doolittle" and Charlotte, the spider, in "Charlotte's Web," both non-human characters, provide archetypes of Mother, and Amanda Beale, in "Maniac Magee," portrays the maternal archetype as well as a conventional heroine in the masculine tradition of employing physical power. This analysis may offer insights for educators who share the dual challenge of providing young readers with literature that includes the diversity of robust female characters and of teaching critical thinking skills so as to understand the roles of heroes and rescuers. AB: Focusing on children's books identified as "notable" for their rich use of language, this book presents essays that discuss literary genres and literary language, responding to the language of Notable Books, and developing an appreciation for language diversity. The book also presents brief essays by well-known children's authors regarding their writing processes. The notable works of children's literature discussed in the book were identified over a 10-year period by the Notable Children's Trade Books in the Language Arts Committee of the Children's Literature Assembly, a special interest group of the National Council of Teachers of English. After an introductory essay ("Wordcrafting: What Makes a Book Notable in the Language Arts?" by Susan Lehr), chapters in the book are (1) "Picture Books: Language That Sparks the Mind and Fuels the Imagination" (Janice V. Kristo and Linda Leonard Lamme); (2) "Poetic Texts and Poetic Language" (Amy A. McClure); (3) "The Language of Facts: Using Nonfiction Books to Support Language Growth" (Sylvia M. Vardell); (4) "Notable Novels in the Classroom: Helping Students to Increase Their Knowledge of Language and Literature" (Christine Doyle Francis); (5) "Language Use through Drama" (Anthony L. Manna); (6) "Language of the Storyteller" (Inga Kromann-Kelly); and (7) "Connecting Writing, Talk, and Literature" (Yvonne Siu-Runyan); (8) "How to Do Things with Words: Trickster Stories, Multicultural Awareness, and Language Arts" (Jon C. Tomlinson); and (11) "Linking Literature and Language Use through Thematic Units" (Barbara Chatton and Susan Hepler). The book concludes with essays written by 38 authors of Notable Books (including Avi, Eve Bunting, Paula Fox, Patricia Lauber, Gary Paulsen, and Jerry Spinelli) that reflect on their own processes of writing and the decisions they make about such matters as wording, style, and the use of dialect. A bibliography of approximately 300 Notable Books is attached. (RS)

AB: A study examined the effect of an alternative language arts program designed to encourage children to take up reading and writing in ways that they find personally, socially, and politically relevant. Throughout a school year, the development of the alternative language arts program in a third/fourth grade classroom in an urban school was documented. Extensive case studies were conducted on five children in the classroom. Data included: classroom observation; field notes; children's stories, poems, essays, and reading response journals; and in-depth conversational interviews that focused on the audiences and functions of the children's reading and writing. Results demonstrated the many different ways in which the children used reading and writing as vehicles for personal, social, and political exploration. Results also documented how particular children constructed their own unique repertoires of reading and writing functions - repertoires that reflected the interests, needs, and issues most central to their individual sensibilities and life histories. Findings suggest: (1) educators need to question viewing comprehension and production of the conceptual content of written texts as the primary functions of reading and writing; and (2) relocating classroom literacy activities within the concrete exigencies of children's lives seems to hold promise for the development of new and more productive forms of literacy pedagogy. (Five tables of data and two figures presenting student writing samples are included; 86 references, a taxonomy of personal, social, and political functions of reading and writing, and eight samples of student writing are attached.) AB: Research shows that middle school students overwhelmingly cite three characteristics that they like in books they read: (1) humor; (2) mystery and suspense; and (3) reality (true stories about real people). Matching students with appropriate books helps turn students "on" to reading, and it is this "electric" reading that encourages lifetime readers. Educators, therefore, need to identify books whose features provide powerful reading for young adults. "Aliens for Breakfast" (1989) by J. Etra and S. Spinner, and "Maniac Magee" (1990) by Jerry Spinelli are just two examples of humorous books written for these students. Stories by Avi, such as "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" (1990) and "The Man Who Was Poe" (1989) are well known to middle school students who love mystery and suspense. And students who like to read about "real" people in "real" situations will surely enjoy Susan Beth Pfeffer's "The Year without Michael" or Caroline Cooney's "The Face on the Milk Carton." Such books truly provide the electricity to prompt students into becoming lifetime readers. It is time for teachers to use the switch provided by research to turn students on to reading. Title: The dynamic nature of response: children reading and responding to Maniac Magee and The friendship
AUTHOR(S): Lehr, Susan; Thompson, Deborah L
Source: The Reading Teacher v 53 no6 Mar 2000.p. 480-93.
Abstract: A study examined the responses of two ethnically diverse populations of fifth-grade students to multicultural literature. Participants were eight students from a rural village in upstate New York and eight students from an ethnically diverse working-class neighborhood in Washington, D.C., who read and responded to Mildred D. Taylor's The Friendship and Jerry Spinelli's Maniac Magee. Results revealed that participants responded typically to the two children's books with literal inferences and moral response and made a lot of personal remarks, that they had sophisticated oral and written responses, and that they understood opposing viewpoints by empathizing with one character but condemning the behavior of another. Further results are presented, and effective strategies for eliciting rich responses from children are outlined.
