AB: The 21 plays in this international anthology for young people range through the classic, modern, and contemporary periods. Several of the plays are translations from other languages, and all begin with an explanatory introduction and contain basic stage directions. The anthology contains plays by Moliere, August Strindberg, Gertrude Stein, Langston Hughes, Israel Horovitz, Lawrence Yep, and others, and also includes traditional material, such as "Jack Juggler" (the first play ever written for children to perform), and a British version of "Punch and Judy." An afterword provides some historical background about plays written for children and suggests that today's plays written for young audiences offer an "accurate, compelling reflection of the world in which we live..." The anthology concludes with a list of additional plays recommended for young people. (NKA)

AB: Laurence Yep's "Dragonwings" won the Newbery Award in 1976. It is the story of a young boy named Moon Shadow and his physical and emotional journeys between Chinese and American cultures. Through Moon Shadow's experiences upon entering the United States as an immigrant, the reader empathizes with him on 3 levels: the perception of Americans from a child's point of view; the common experience of confronting new situations; and Americans' common history of immigration. Yep maintains a balance with Moon Shadow's experiences in both cultures. Miss Whitlaw teaches Moon Shadow some English and encourages him to write short paragraphs about dragons; he becomes a proficient enough writer to establish a correspondence with the Wright Brothers for his father, an expert kite maker. Laurence Yep writes that "Dragonwings" is a "historical fantasy" inspired by both his father's journey to America and the newspaper account of a young Chinese flier who flew for 20 minutes in the hills of Oakland, California in 1909. In researching "Dragonwings" Yep was unable to discover much about the human experience of Chinese immigrants to America at the turn of the century. His own experience was with a family that did not speak Chinese- -when he attended a Chinese school, he was placed in the "dummies" class. Beyond Yep's relevance to a Chinese-American audience, his work reflects a common humanity to readers coming of age or not, bicultural or not, attempting to find themselves in the pieces of their particular puzzles. AB: Taking off from the theme that makes Laurence Yep such a popular and beloved young adult author--the outsider seeking identity and connection in a strange, foreign world--this study of Yep's most important works shows how his experiences as a Chinese American in San Francisco fill his stories with firsthand knowledge of what it is like to be an outsider. The study points out that Yep, through his science fiction, fantasy, and historical and contemporary novels, offers young people strategies for growing up and fitting in. Throughout the study, quotations from interviews with Yep and from his own autobiography illuminate his motivation and inspiration, as do his borrowings from Chinese mythology and his own family history. Some of Yep's books discussed in the study are "Dragon of the Lost Sea", "Sweetwater," "The Serpent's Children," "The Mark Twain Murders," "Shadow Lord," "Child of the Owl," "The Ghost Fox," "Rainbow People," "Tongues of Jade," and many more. Appendixes note awards and honors won by Laurence Yep and contain articles written by Yep about his fiction. A selected bibliography is attached. (NKA)

AB: Elementary schools are ideal places to build the bridges between Chinese-Americans and the larger society. Studying the history of Chinese-Americans, examining their many contributions to the United States, and studying the contemporary Chinese-American population are good places to start. There are many books available to help students understand the plight of Chinese-Americans, including "Mountain of Gold" (Betty Lee Sung); "The Chinese Americans" (Milton Meltzer); "Dragonwings" (Laurence Yep); and "Fifth Chinese Daughter" (Jade Snow Wong). Other appropriate activities besides reading include discussions, Chinese American visitors in the classroom, and field trips to Chinatown. In depth studies, experiences, and personal contact with Chinese Americans create lasting impressions in the minds of elementary school children and these impressions help shape their attitudes.
