Decoding (Skills)
The various skills a person uses to decipher a printed sentence into an understandable statement.

Direct Instruction
Teaching or demonstrating a concept or skill and practicing it for mastery.

Dyslexia
A learning disability characterized by expressive or receptive interference with oral or written language. Problems may emerge in reading, spelling, writing, speaking, or listening. Dyslexia is not a disease, nor is it the result of low intelligence.

Emergent Literacy/Emergent Reading and Writing
The beginning stages of literacy that can be seen in a range of behaviors related to written language including creative play to deal with written material; reading and writing related activities such as drawing, printing, and storytelling culminating in conventional literacy in succeeding months and years.

Fluency
Achieving speed and accuracy in recognizing words and comprehending connected text, and coordinating the two.
