Parent Activity Phonemic Awareness and Blending Parents can help their children daily in many easy ways to raise their consciousness of word sounds and of blending those sounds into recognizable words. You may find the examples below helpful. Remember, of course, that the library and the Internet offer you free resources for all kinds of activities related to phonics. For example: www.kidscanlearn.com Local bookstores and teaching/learning supply stores also have books and audio tapes that you may find useful in practicing sound-letter correspondences. Activities Jingles: Recite two-line jingles except for the last word that you ask your child to supply. For example: "The air was filled with smoke. It made me cough and ________ (choke)." "Can you fix a flat tire, When your pants are on _________? (fire)" Thinking of a word: Kids love to play the word puzzle game that begins, "I'm thinking of a word...... That rhymes with hat. It has four paws, and the word is _______(cat)." That begins like ball and rhymes with cat. The word is ________ (bat)." Manual and worktext: Of course don't forget that there are activities in your course manual, worktext, and the Phonics Toolkit.
