Parent Activity

Additonal Sound Spelling Patterns

Word families help children identify and pronounce words as they are learning to read. Here are some common word families that you use:

-oy: boy, toy, soy -oi: oil, boil, toil
-ash: bash, cash, dash -ish: dish, fish, wish
-ush: brush, rush, mush -edge: edge, ledge, dredge
-udge: budge, fudge, judge -ing: ring, sing, wing
-atch: match, catch, match -ight: might, right, sight

When your child stops reading to pronounce a word that is part of a family, take the time to write a few words that fit into that particular pattern. This will show your child that learning one word can expand into others that he or she can easily pronounce.

This and similar activities will remind your children that they are gradually becoming independent readers, an important goal, of course.
