The Great Campout Adventure

It was our first campout together, and we had just gotten the tents up and the fire built. I was excited to be out in the woods with my friends, but I was a little scared, too. The only adult there was Jamie's big brother, who was just barely an adult, and he had already fallen asleep in one of the tents. We were all finishing eating our toasted marshmallows when something surprising happened....

...the bear bag came crashing down. This was a kit bag loaded with all our food, sodas, and film and hung up high between two tall pine trees. It had to be hung at least 12 feet high above the ground. The bag should be hung in the middle of the trees. Jamie's older brother told us that bears cannot reach the bag. Bears these days are more intelligent than eighth graders like Jamie's brother.

There beside the tree was a big black bear. He had just reached up to the big knot Jaime's older brother had tied to the tree, and chewed it off. When he saw us, he stood up on his hind legs and roared at us. It was so loud that the whole forest shook! Then he started running after us.

We ran as fast as we could through the forest screaming our heads off hoping Jamie's brother would wake up and save us. Just when we thought the bear was going to get us.....

...we started screaming and yelling for help, and some of us started to run away. When the bear heard us screaming, he stopped running at us. Jamie's big brother came out of the tent and asked "What is all the noise about?" Then he saw the bear standing between him and us.

He screamed and then ran back into the tent and came out with a big flash light. He shone it on the big bear's face. The bear got angry and ran after Jamie's big brother.

Jamie's brother had run into the bushes from the bear and met up with this prickly animal. Neither looked happy about this unexpected meeting. The bear saw the porcupine and backed away from the animal. The porcupine followed Jamie's brother into his tent.

We poked our heads inside the tent only to find that Jamie's big brother was trying to bash the porcupine with his pillow. We held the tent flap open and the porcupine staggered out looking dismayed. Then we heard the bear roar in the distance.

But we climbed in the tent and tried to go to sleep anyway. But something kept us awake. It was the sound of a chewing noise. We looked out and saw the big black bear back outside the tent. It was eating all our food.

"I told you to pack the beans," I said. "Bears can't eat tins and beans would keep us going all weekend. Grandma once told me that bears would eat anything but beans."

We searched our gear and found some bug spray. We quickly sprayed our tent hoping the bear would hate the smell as much as the bugs did. It worked! After eating the food, the bear walked near our tent, sniffed it and walked back into the woods. We were relieved but knew we were not out of danger yet.

...let Jamie's brother sleep in the tent and we would sleep outside. When we moved the sleeping bags outside we were regretting our decision, but decided to go ahead anyway. Then, from behind one of the nearby trees...
