Internships

The internship is the primary opportunity for the baccalaureate candidate to experience, on a full time basis, the practical application of the curriculum in a professional setting. This experience is designed to provide the student with an overview of an agency's total program and involve the student in leadership, supervisory, and management assignments.

Basic guidelines for the internship are:

  1. A full-time 14 week experience in a recreation, park, tourism, therapeutic, sport, outdoor or natural resource agency is required. (Therapeutic Recreation students must complete their internship in a therapeutic recreation setting for 15 weeks.)
  2. The internship may only be taken following successful completion of required courses and credit hours.
  3. Students seeking placement in an internship must have a 2.0 overall GPA, a 2.0 GPA in required recreation courses, and be recommended by their advisor.
  4. The student must complete HPER R301 prior to enrollment in internship.
  5. The internship may be done in either the Fall, Spring, or Summer terms, but spring and summer are the recommended periods.
  6. Grades of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory are awarded upon internship completion.
  7. Students may accept stipends, housing, board, travel, and/or part-time employment from the internship agency.
  8. Students are assigned only to agencies that have been approved by the Department.
  9. Internship policy and procedures guidelines are available from the Department Internship Coordinators and must be followed.
