Reynold E. Carlson Lecture: Guest lecturer, Director Jonathan Jarvis to discuss: "National Parks and Outdoor's Role in Public Health."

Jonathan Jarvis, Director of the National Park Service discussed “National Parks and the Outdoors’ Role in Public Health” delivered at the annual Carlson Lecture on April 27, 2012 in the Mobley Auditorium to a standing room only audience. This event is held in honor of environmentalist and Indiana University faculty member Reynold E. Carlson, who supervised the development of Indiana University’s leadership in outdoor recreation in the 1970’s, helped found the National Association for Intepretation, and established Indiana University’s own program at Bradford Woods Outdoor Education Center. 64th Annual Lebert H. Weir Banquet was very successful!!
The Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies and The Graduate Recreation Society held the 64th Annual Lebert H. Weir Banquet on Friday, April 13, 2012. The banquet was a great success and well attended. This year’s Lebert H. Weir Award winners were Lauren Seger (Undergraduate Student), Erin Zukis (Masters Student), and Lauren Duffy (Doctoral Student). Robert Toalson received the “Legend Award.” Recognition of Distinguished Faculty consisted of Bill Ramos, recipient of the “Student Choice Award,” Dr. Alan Ewert, recipient of the ” HPER Outstanding Senior Researcher Award,” and Dr. Bryan McCormick, fellow inductee in the Academy of Leisure Sciences Fellow. Thank you to the Graduate Recreation Society Officers and banquet committee members for their commitment and hard work.

Dr. Bryan McCormick, Professor and Department Chair, has been elected a Fellow in the Academy of Leisure Sciences. This honor is in recognition to his long, outstanding contribution to scholarship in the field. The formal induction into the Academy was at the annual meeting held in conjunction with 2011 NRPA Congress & Exposition, Atlanta, Georgia. The Academy of Leisure Sciences is an honorary organization and undertakes various projects related to leisure and recreation studies. The ALS was created in 1980 by 30 founding members. Since then, more than 70 Fellows have been elected to the Academy in recognition of their outstanding contributions and knowledge about leisure and recreation. Induction as a fellow in the ALS recognizes one's significant contributions to the scholarly study of leisure.

Indiana University Dept. of Recreation, Park, and Tourism "LEGENDS"
Throughout the years, RPTS has been a leader in developing the research and professional practice base of the profession and has educated many leaders in the field. There are a number of individuals associated with the university who have emerged as inspirational leaders in the development of the profession. They are legends in the field. LEGENDS recognition is bestowed on such individuals by The National Advisory Committee of the Department of RPTS. Honor as a LEGEND may be bestowed on graduates, friends and former faculty of the Department of RPTS and its predecessor departments. Nominations for such individuals are being accepted by the committee until March 1, 2012. LEGENDS will be honored at the Department's Weir Banquet this spring.
Alumnus Dr. Anne Binkley receives prestitious award
RPTS alumnus, Dr. Anne Binkley has received the The Frank Stewart Distinguished Service Award. This award is the most prestigious award given by Parks and Leisure, Australia and is bestowed by industry peers for the significant contributions made to the development, promotion and advocacy of the parks and leisure industry through personal and professional endeavours.
County Has Deficit of Local Park Land, DNR Study Finds

Here’s the good news: Porter County scores above average in miles of public beaches, total park acres, and fishing access points compared to four other comparable communities in the U.S.
Here’s the bad news, probably none of its surprising to residents: Porter County scores below average in miles of multi-use trails, it’s the only one of the comparable communities surveyed where residents are charged beach fees, and while it boasts plenty of sandy shoreline there isn’t much parking near the beaches.

To their delight, Dr. Ruth Russell and Dr. Lynn Jamieson's book Leisure Program Planning and Delivery, has been translated into Chinese for distrbution overseas.
New Book by Barbara Hawkins
Congratulations to RPTS Faculty member Barbara Hawkins on the publication of her book, Active Living in Older Adulthood: Principles and Practices of Activity Programs.
New Research Study by Dr. Chen, "The Study of Social Impacts of Tourism in Finnmark, Norway"
Dr. Chen’s study, which was funded by the National Science Foundation, aims to evaluate the perceived social changes in an arctic region of Norway.
New Research Study by Drs. Chancellor and Cole, "Tourism and Hospitality Study for Region 9"
Dr. Charles Chancellor and Dr. Shu Cole have published a new study, entitled "Tourism and Hospitality Study for Region 9: Needs Assessment, Career Opportunities and the Impact of Tourism to the Local Communitites."
Mick Renneisen Publishes First Book
Congratulations to Mick Renneisen who co-authored his first book titled Recreation Facility Management: Design, Development, Operations and Utilization – Published by Human Kinetics, 2009.
Joel Meier Receives Paul K. Petzoldt Award
Educator, scholar, and avid outdoorsman, Joel Meier, M.S., Re.D,, Professor Emeritus in the HPER Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies Department, is this year's winner of the Paul K. Petzoldt award from the Wilderness Education Association (WEA).

Eppley Institute Creating a Parks and Recreation Master Plan for Gary, Indiana
This will be done through engaging the public via public workshops and focus groups, interviewing community stakeholders, and by educating the Park Board and Common Council on the park and recreation master plan. As part of this process, a full inventory of all Gary City parks (approx 60) will be conducted. This inventory will assess park facilities, condition, and opportunities and will take place the week of November 10.
