Minors
The Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies offers six different minor degrees. They include: Aquatics, Ecotourism, Fundraising and Resource Development, Leadership, Outdoor Recreation and Resource Management, Recreation and Park Administration, Recreational Sport Management, Tourism Management, and Youth Sport Management.
Aquatics
The Aquatics minor is offered jointly between the Departments of Kinesiology and Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies. There are 18 credit hours required to graduate with this minor. A minor in Aquatics helps prepare students to step into entry-level positions in aquatic management, pool operators, or water instruction. To learn more about this minor please contact Bill Ramos.
Ecotourism
Fundraising and Resource Development
Leadership
The 15-credit undergraduate Leadership minor is an interdisciplinary program in which the student will explore and experience multiple frameworks of leadership. The minor prepares the student for real-life leadership experiences, both on campus and in the larger, global community. Leadership development will relate to students’ aspirations as they transition from the on-campus extracurricular services to professions, communities, and public and private organizations. Outdoor Recreation and Resource Management
Outdoor Recreation and Resource Management minor will prepare students in the knowledge areas of outdoor recreation resources and their users as well as provide the skills required. Topical areas covered include outdoor recreation, environmental education, interpretive techniques, outdoor adventure education, recreational resource management, and organized camping.
Recreation and Park Administration
The Recreation and Park Administration minor helps prepare students to step into entry-level positions in a wide variety of government and nonprofit organizations throughout the United States and around the world. This 15-credit hour curriculum focuses on enhancing the quality of people’s lives by helping them participate in challenging and satisfying recreational activities.
Recreational Sport Management
Students will be prepared in the area of sport management through a unique and highly successful approach. In this 15-credit hour program students will be trained for positions in all types of participatory recreational sports programs.
Tourism Management
The Tourism Management minor prepares students for a wide range of tourism careers, including city visitor and convention bureau manager, university conference bureau coordinator, state department of tourism researcher, and theme park special groups promoter. The minor program provides a flexible structure to select from a variety of courses to complement the student's major curriculum of personal interests.
