Recreational Sport Management Specialization

The Recreational Sport Management specialization in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies focuses on enhancing the quality of people’s lives by helping them participate in challenging physical activities and by bringing professional management skills to state-of-the-art sports facilities and programs around the world.

The curriculum includes a general education core, specialization courses, electives, 320 hours of field experience, and an internship. Each student meets regularly with a faculty advisor for ongoing academic and career planning.

The Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation has a unique and highly successful approach to professional preparation in the area of sport management. We prepare students to assume direct leadership and supervisory positions in all types of participatory recreational sport programs, and for the management of people and resources in a variety of recreational sport settings.

After completing the program, students are eligible for certification as Recreational Sports Specialists by the National Intramural Recreational Sport Association.

Because people are spending more time and money on leisure and fitness services, the job outlook for recreation and park administration graduates is good. In 2000, Newsweek predicted that 50 percent of American jobs will be in leisure and tourism by 2050. The Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies prepares and makes available to all students a monthly nationwide listing of recreation-related jobs totaling more than 1,500 annually.


Hands-On Experience

Through class practica, projects, internships, and field experiences, Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies helps you apply what you learn when—and where—
you learn it. IU and the local community offer the following recreational opportunities and living laboratories that will give you firsthand experience:

  • Bloomington SportsPlex: This public indoor fitness and sports complex offers a variety of sports programs and fitness activities.
  • Monroe County YMCA: This popular facility offers youth, family, and adult sports, as well as aquatics, fitness, and various health and wellness programs for residents in the Bloomington community.
  • Division of Recreational Sports: This campus sport and fitness service unit manages on-campus sports facilities in the HPER building and the $22 million Student Recreational Sports Center.

In addition, IU is within an hour’s drive of major amateur and professional sport organizations such as the Indianapolis Colts, Pacers, and Indians.

Degree Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Recreation
Major in Recreational Sport Management
124 credit hours with a minimum 2.0 GPA required for graduation

Admissions

A student seeking admission to the Recreational Sport Management major within the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies must declare this major while in the University Division.  When the student has passed 26 credits and has a cumulative GPA of 2.0, this student will be automatically certified into this School of HPER major program.  A student, who is already in an upper division school must visit the School of HPER Records Office in HPER 115 to request to change from the current major to the Recreational Sport Management major program.
