Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies at Indiana University prepares its undergraduates to become leaders in the world's largest, most diverse industry- tourism. Today, people are spending more time and money on leisure and fitness services than ever before. Tourism is the fastest growing industry in the country. In 2000, Newsweek predicted that 50 percent of American jobs will be in leisure and tourism by 2050.

Tourism Management Specialization

The Tourism Management program focuses on developing competencies in administration, budgeting, communications, event planning, facility design, management, marketing, and research. Students pursue a course of study leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation, with a specialization in Tourism Management.

In addition to the Tourism Management specialization, the curriculum includes a professional recreation core, and significant field work ranging from introductory practical experience to a professional internship. Each semester students are required to meet with academic and career advisors for ongoing planning.

Job Opportunities In Tourism Management

Tourism Management graduates are prepared for a wide range of careers, including positions as managers, marketing professionals, directors, travel brokers, tour guides, program coordinators, researchers and promoters. Our graduates work in a broad range of settings, including:

  • Visitor and convention bureaus

The department provides all students a monthly nationwide listing of recreation-related job opportunities totaling more than 1,500 annually.

Through class practica, projects, internship opportunities, and field experiences, the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies helps you apply what you learn when - and where - you learn it.  Nearby facilities include:

  • French Lick Springs Resort: Historic area offers banquet and food operations, and meeting, recreation, golf and casino operations, as well as tour management.
  • Indiana Memorial Union: This campus hotel, conference, retail, dining, and recreation center offers experience in front desk management, event planning, catering, and a wide array of tourism-related services.
  • Bloomington Convention & Visitors Bureau: This joint university, city, and county organization offers experience in marketing, event planning, and a board range of customer service opportunities.
  • Bloomington Convention Center: Paid and volunteer experience in event planning and meeting management.

In addition, many locations in the Bloomington area are popular tourist destinations- Brown County, the Hoosier National Forest, French Lick Springs Resort, several state parks, and the Indiana University campus itself, to name just a few.

BS in Recreation - Tourism Management - Requirements effective for students starting at IUB between fall 2008 and spring 2010


124 credit hours with a minimum 2.0 GPA required for graduation

Admissions

A student seeking admission to the Tourism Management major within the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies must declare this major while in the University Division.  When the student has passed 26 credits and has a cumulative GPA of 2.0, this student will be automatically certified into this School of HPER major program.  A student, who is already in an upper division school must visit the School of HPER Records Office in HPER 115 to request to change from the current major to the Tourism Management major program.
