2003 Indiana Roundtable on Post-Communism:
"The Politics of Cultural Expression" Co-sponsored

This year, panelists representing China, the Czech Republic, and Romania will discuss "the Politics of Cultural Expression." Panelists will be presented with a main question before the roundtable and submit responses prior to the event. A Video Showing of Plastic People of the Universe (2001) (Czech with English Subtitles) will precede the roundtable on Wednesday, April 9th at 7pm in Ballantine Hall 228. “The Politics of Cultural Expression” Thursday April 10,2003 A follow-up working meeting will be held on Friday April 11th for faculty and graduate students. Chair:Jeffrey Wasserstrom is an Associate Professor of History and of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University and specialist on modern China and revolution movements. Panelists: Paul Wilson is a newspaper and magazine editor, translator, writer, and radio producer based in Toronto. He spent ten years in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 1980s and has published translations of work by Vaclav Havel, Josef Skvorecky, Bohumil Hrabal, and Ivan Klima. Chen Xiamomei is a specialist on Chinese theater and Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures at The Ohio State University. Born and raised in the PRC, she received her PhD from Indiana University in Comparative Literature and has published books on political drama and discourse in Maoist and post-Mao China. Commentators: Timothy Wiles is a Professor of English and specialist on modern and contemporary political drama, focusing on Poland. | ||||||||
