IST Lab Policy

LAB PHILOSOPHY

The equipment in the IST lab has been placed in the lab to further the educational goals of IST students. We want to see the equipment used to its best advantage at all times. Toward this end, we establish the following policies regarding use of IST Lab equipment.

Five User Categories

The IST lab recognizes five categories of users with respect to the workstations that have been designated "High End Workstations( Machine A,B,C)" in room 2271:

Category 1 (Priority 1): GROUPWORK These are groups who need to utilize one High End Workstation and the capabilities such a station offers. It is possible that one Medium End Workstation could be included in such a grouping requirement, but this is not essential to the definition.

Category 2 (Priority 1): HIGH END/EXPERIMENTAL/DEVELOPMENTAL This is an individual who has work that cannot be accomplished on a Middle End Workstation. Typically, it requires specialized IST controlled software, scanning, project work that cannot be done elsewhere, or any specialized use which cannot be accomplished readily elsewhere within the Wright Education building.

Category 3 (Priority 2): CD BURNS IST recognizes the need to burn CD's for data storage, packaging, use, etc. This user-type takes priority over individuals, but should yield to scheduled group work CD BURNS may schedule the machine for anytime within a 24 hour period for exclusive use of CD BURN with the exception of the PRIME TIME USE period. IMPORTANT
Note: IF YOU ARE BURNING A CD, YOU MUST BE PHYSICALLY PRESENT. กค USE OF THE CD BURNER is for IUB projects. Burning CD's for personal recreational use or in violation of any copyright laws is prohibited.

Prime Time Use: "Prime Time" is considered to be the hours between 10:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m. this gives students the opportunity to schedule the High End Workstations for group work before and after class without having to pre-empt machines tied up for CD BURNS.

Category 4 (Priority 3): CASUAL USE The casual user may NOT schedule a High End Workstation for e-mail communication, web surfing, general word processing, or other general use commonly available on any standard UITS workstation.
Casual users may USE the High End Workstation but must yield use of the machine to a scheduled or PRIORITY ONE or TWO user.
Unattended Machines: If a machine has been left unattended for longer than fifteen minutes and another user needs that machine, they may take over use of the machine after first closing and saving all open files and disconnecting the individual's locker connection. Any personal items left by the machine should be carefully placed out of harm's way.
Category 5 (Priority 1): SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES: Students with special circumstances should discuss their needs with the IST Lab Managers who will assist them in arranging for special projects. Contact your lab manager by writing to istlab@indiana.edu.
