The Bloomington Faculty Council passed a policy requiring instructors of courses in which freshman or University Division sophomores are enrolled, as well as instructors of all General Education Common Ground courses, to submit letter grade evaluations for these students by Monday of the sixth week of the term. These grades are temporarily assigned to provide an early indication of the student's academic progress. Early Evaluations are intended for advising purposes and will not become part of the student record.

(Approved BFC 12/18/09)

Early assessment and feedback about student progress are valuable to students, faculty, and academic advisors, allowing each to make informed decisions. Early feedback is especially valuable for beginning students, and for those taking classes outside their primary areas of interest. To prompt such feedback, all instructors of courses in which there are freshmen or University Division sophomores enrolled, as well as instructors of all students enrolled in General Education Common Ground courses, shall receive a request for a letter grade evaluation of those students in the fourth week of the regular semester, with a submission deadline of Monday of the sixth week. The method by which an early letter grade evaluation is determined, and the percentage of the final grade which that evaluation represents, are decided by the instructor. This evaluation will be accessible to the student and the student's academic advisor.

Recognizing that ongoing evaluation of all undergraduate students is important, the faculty further recommends that all undergraduates receive a written or oral evaluation of their performance in a course as early as compatible with the nature of the course, but not later than after two-thirds of the semester has elapsed.

Early Evaluation grades are submitted between the fourth week and the sixth week of the fall and spring term. Students can view their early evaluation grades in the SIS Student Center in OneStart as soon as instructors submit their early evaluations. The deadline for instructors to submit early evaluations is Monday of the 6th week of the term. See the Grades section of the Official Calendar for the date when Early Evaluations are due.

These grades are available to students in OneStart from the moment instructors submit them, until the week before final exams.

Early Evaluations are reported by your instructor through the Grade Roster for your class. Your early evaluation grades for each class can be viewed in the SIS Student Center.

Excessive Absence Indicator

The M notation can be used in combination with only the grades of F or I (Incomplete) to indicate excessive absence.

  • FM grade indicates students who are failing due to lack of attendance or who have never attended.

  • IM grade indicates students for whom no progress evaluation is possible, whose current enrollment status is unknown, or who may be in the process of officially withdrawing.
