Dear Bison Alumni,

It's been another exciting year for ROTC at Indiana University, filled with both significant accomplishments and growth. We currently have 116 cadets and Early Commissioning Program Lieutenants in our ranks and fully expect our numbers to exceed 130 cadets next year with the opening of an extension program at IUPU-Columbus. Amongst our significant achievements this year:
  • - Best Program in our Brigade (states of Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and upper half of Illinois)
  • - Most Improved Program in our Brigade, 4th most improved program in the nation
  • - 4th best performance in the nation (out of 272 programs) at Leader Development and Assessment Course (new name for Advanced Camp/NALC)
  • - Made our commissioning mission for 5th year in a row
  • - Contracts: From Sep 06 to present, have increased number of contracted cadets from 42 to 74.
  • - Recruiting: We have grown the battalion from 87 to 116 cadets in one year and will break 130 next year. In addition to our growth in numbers, we have also recruited the largest and most talented 4 year scholarship class in IU's history - 29 Student-Athlete-Leaders with an average SAT of 1239
  • - Ranger Challenge: we continue to dominate, having won both the 5-man and 9-man competitions (have won 9-man competition 3 of last 4 years).
  • - Only program in the country to execute a DOD strategic language grant last year (4 programs were picked, IU was only program to execute in 1st year)
As you can see, our cadets continue to uphold the high standards you established for us in the past. If any of you should find yourselves in Bloomington please feel free to drop on by. At this printing it is anticipated that we will be leaving our current location on 814 East Third Street for a newer facility in the Smith Research Center at the corner of 10th and by-pass street (located very near to the Supply Room) sometime in August. We hope, with your support, to move to a newer, more centralized location in the years ahead.

All the best,

Eric D. Arnold

To All Indiana University Army ROTC Alumni

MAY 6, 2008

Congratulations to all of you, commissioned through Army ROTC at IU. As you know, we formed an Affiliated Group of the Indiana University Alumni Association (IUAA). As a founding board member and President, I wish to welcome you to our new, supportive organization, to explain our purpose and to invite you all to participate at any level.

Our purpose is to promote and advance the interests of the Army ROTC program at Indiana University; to provide Alumni with a convenient focal point to maintain long lasting bonds with the university and each other; to assist in the education of Army ROTC cadets; and to support IU and the IUAA.

What can you do for the Cadets at our IU Army ROTC Program? I know how much we all owe to the Program and I know how little time we all have to devote to supporting such activities from our past. Herman B Wells said, "It is not what you do that counts. It is what you help others do that makes progress." To help all the Cadets at our IU Army ROTC Program to progress, you can provide any level of financial support to the various Military Science Endowment Funds in the IU Foundation.

As you all know, it is important to stay in touch with IU. Professional, two-way communication benefits everyone. Many of you belong to School/Department Alumni Organizations and we can offer the IU Army ROTC Alumni Association, all of which are affiliated with the IUAA. Whether you served on Active Duty, in the Guard or in the Reserve, we want to hear from you. Tell us about yourself and your experience and anything of interest. We may publish it or just put it in the archives, but we want to hear how IU Army ROTC affected your life and the lives of your families and friends. All Veterans and Military Retirees helped win the last wars and we will help win the next wars, by supporting the front lines. Tell us how you can help the Program that gave you your start.

Please tell everyone you know about the Army ROTC Program at IU. The focus is on leadership of excellence. The Program is great and you can be proud to support it and the Cadets in it. As you know, Army training prepares us for the eventualities of War. It also prepares us for life after the Army. Think about the success you enjoy right now in life and see what you can do help our next generation to progress. You can help recruit Cadets. Take a High School Senior or a College Student to Bloomington and let the IU Army ROTC Cadets show you and the Student around.

Thank you for your service and for your support. The IU Army ROTC Program needs you. Let’s all do our part to make a great Program even better. Be sure to contact the IU Foundation and contribute to one of the Military Science Endowment Funds. If you wish to, you can even start your own Fund; like I did…Jones-Military Science Fund for the benefit of Military Science…or you can help by adding to it or any other Fund at the IU Foundation to support the Cadets.

Go IU!
