Sergeant First Class Roy Hughes

Sergeant First Class Roy Hughes was born 11 November 1966 in Muncie, Indiana. He joined the Indiana Army National Guard in November 1983 with an initial assignment as a Observation Helicopter Mechanic (67V) but was later found to be color blind which changed his direction to becoming an Administrative Specialist. SFC Hughes attended Basic Training in the summer of 1984, graduated Greenfield Central High School in 1985, and immediately left for Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, Carolina.

 

SFC Hughes accepted an Active Guard Reserve position with the Indiana National Guard in March 1986 as a Unit Administrator. In 1988, he experienced recruiting for the first time for the National Guard with a high success rate through 1993. In 1993, SFC Hughes, responding to a calling to the pastorate, attended Bible College and began to pursue a degree in Pastoral Ministries. Throughout this time SFC Hughes worked as a Part-time recruiter for the Iowa National Guard. Once arriving back in Indiana, he initially accepted a position recruiting for the Indiana National Guard in Bloomington, which lasted about nine (9) months before he left to pastor a Church in Bloomington. After four years, SFC Hughes returned to recruiting for the Guard with a new passion that has brought him to the present point in his career. It was during his four years of pastoring that SFC Hughes became a Gunnery Sergeant for a Field Artillery unit, which is a career field he has grown to love.

 

Sergeant First Class Hughes holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Religion and Business from Liberty University, which he finished while assigned to IU Army ROTC. He is currently working on completing a Masters of Arts degree in Church Growth and Evangelism from Liberty University. From Feb 1999 until coming to IU Army ROTC, SFC Hughes has served in the following leadership positions: (1) Recruiting and Retention NCO (2) Operations NCO for Recruiting Command (3) Assistant NCOIC for Recruiting (4) NCOIC for a Recruiting Team. SFC Hughes was assigned to Indiana University Army ROTC has the Simultaneous Membership Program Coordinator (SMP) in October 2006. Some of his military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), and the Master Recruiting and Retention Non-Commissioned Officer Badge with two-diamonds.

 

SFC Hughes is married to Marcia Hughes, with three children, Kaleigh, Kristen, and Keith. In addition to his position with IU Army ROTC, he is the Pastor of Bethel Lane Community Holiness Church in Bloomington, Indiana. He enjoys time with his family, training and instructing Martial Arts, sports, and especially golf and NASCAR.
