PMS Welcome Letter to MS-Is (Fall 2008)

We look forward to welcoming you to Indiana University and the United States Army next fall. Unlike your other non-ROTC matriculants, you are entering two entirely new societies - the university AND the military profession of arms. Both can provide you with many skills which will dramatically enhance your ability to achieve excellence. I hope you will embrace the opportunities you will be provided to gain knowledge, confidence, leadership skills and physical fitness.

Indiana University is a world class institution with a phenomenal reputation. There will be opportunities to learn from some of the greatest minds in their chosen fields of study. There will be world-class speakers brought to Bloomington to provide you with their outlooks on world affairs. There are opportunities to learn languages that are not taught anywhere else in America. And you will have the opportunity to learn from classmates from all 50 states and over 120 countries. To learn why Indiana University is your best option, please view the complementary enclosed DVD (enclosed in the red folder) featuring the IU experience. We are also including another DVD with a WTIU feature of our program.

The Army, with its sister services, is unlike any other profession or calling. The military officer might be considered the modern Renaissance man. We are looking for Scholars, Athletes and Leaders and require some degree of excellence in all three of these major components of cadet life. I am looking for everyone to be above average. You were chosen because you have what it takes to achieve excellence.

You will be joining a winning team here at Indiana University Army ROTC. We were 4th in the nation (out of 272 host programs) last summer at the US Army Cadet Command’s Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC). Our Ranger Challenge and Pershing Rifles teams are perennial winners. In fact, we have been number 1 at Ranger Challenge for the past two years and in the top three for the past five years. Our Pershing Rifles company is the second oldest in the nation and we were the 2nd best in the nation in 2004 and 2005. We are one of four universities in the nation to host the Army’s new Strategic Languages Program, inaugurated last year. We are the 5th oldest Army ROTC program in the nation. Our university was one of the first ten universities to admit women in Army ROTC in 1972. We have made our commission mission for 5 years running, overproducing the past three years. Also, we have recently received the 2007 Cadet Command OFPA Outstanding Army ROTC Unit award from US Army Cadet Command, naming IU's Bison Battalion the top ROTC program in the Nation.

We look forward to having you in the program next fall. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any assistance or have any questions.

Best of luck,

ERIC D. ARNOLD

MILITARY SCIENCE INSTRUCTOR WELCOME LETTER - 21 May 2008

Dear Freshman,

Welcome to the Indiana University Army ROTC (Screaming Bison) Battalion. We are a premier leadership and development program with 168 years experience developing leaders of character and excellence. I congratulate each and every one of you who chose to come here either by scholarship, Guard or Reserve soldiers, or just trying the course. It’s every cadre’s intent to teach you about the rich history of the ROTC and the basic skills required by the military. My sole purpose as one of your first year instructor s is to lay the foundation for your future development as a leader, throughout the ROTC program and beyond. By no means will this be easy. ROTC is looking for responsible, hard working students who know how to be on time. There will be demands and challenges on you which will help develop character, a disciplined life, and build teamwork with your peers. A few priorities in this program are leadership development, physical fitness improvement, academic achievement, tactical proficiency, and teamwork. You must treat others with dignity and respect.

If you follow our guidance we promise to give you fulfilling training, great mentorship, and the experience will develop long term leadership traits, skills and capabilities that will enable you to lead in whatever environment you find yourself involved in. We have exciting activities planned for every semester. This class requires no obligation from you, and your participation will help you succeed in your future career. I’m here to help you with any problem or question you may have and my door is always open. You can contact me at 812-855-6168.

Sincerely,

SFC Roy A. Hughes
