Archive Technician Internship, Mine Safety and Health Administration

MSHA is interested in hiring a summer Archive Technician intern. This opportunity will allow a current student the opportunity to acquire valuable experience and working knowledge in archival work. The primary dutires of this intern position involve technical work in accessioning, arranging, describing, preserving, and using archives, non-current records, and related material kept in the Technical Information Center and Library's Archives. The student intern will assist in preparing archival materials for public access using archival software. Following general instruction, the student intern will perform day-to-day work while applying subject matter knowledge to records and materials. Work is performed under the supervision of the Library Director.
This temporary summer appointment opportunity is located at MSHA's National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beckley, WV.
This position requires excercising judgment in completing work tasks such as reviewing materials and applying mining-related subject terms. An understanding of search and retrieval behaviors of users and a fundamental knowledge of databases is required. Knowledge of mining history or culture is a plus, as is coursework in any combination of the following: history, library science, or information technology. In order to receive consideration, you must be a student enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) in a course of study leading to a degree at an accredited learning institution.

Tri-State University, Perry T. Ford Memorial library, Summer Internship

QUALIFICATIONS: Coursework toward an MLS degree from an ALA accredited program. Preferred include degree concentration in archival studies, knowledge of conservation and preservation practices, knowledge of organizational techniques like classification, controlled vocabulary, metadata tagging and record keeping, skill in researching historic material, ability to apply collection policies, and strong attention to detail
DUTIES: Tri-State University Archives include university records, manuscripts, and photographs. The intern will organize and index the archives collection. Responsibilities include identifying (inventory) and sorting materials, creating a finding aid / indexing system, determining storage needs, requesting supplies, indexing (describing, giving metadata tags, data entry), and processing items - cleaning, repairing and storing properly. The intern will work under the direction of the Library Director and assist with planning and coordinating the project and establishing policies for this collection.
SALARY: $2,000 per month

Wylie House Museum, Indiana University

Ongoing Internship Opportunities
Wylie House Museum, the home of IU's first president, Andrew Wylie, is administratively part of the IU Libraries. We have for a number of years offered internships here, and for students interested in archives, special libraries, or museums the opportunities here have been very appealing.
Cataloging museum artifacts, rehousing of textile collections, processing Wylie family letters and photographs, web design and maintenance, exhibit development and installation, developing curriculum materials for elementary students, helping with special events, giving tours....these are some of the things that former interns have gained experience in while working here.
