Advisors

The SAC staff fully recognize the contributions of advisors on the IUB campus and wish to make your job easier and more efficient. This link is designed to help you see our services and courses at a glance.

A Quick Guide to Services

Individualized Academic Assessment & Assistance

If you are unsure about what your academic strengths and weaknesses might be, what kind of help you need, what learning skills classes might best serve your needs, or you need help with a particular learning skill, the Individualized Academic Assessment and Assistance Program offers the opportunity to explore all options before choosing a plan that is tailored specifically to your needs. The staff can work intensively one-on-one with students on a long term basis if needed. Students who have learning disabilities or who are in academic difficulty can benefit greatly from such help. Advisors, faculty and parents who have students whom they feel could benefit from this form of academic support, or students themselves may contact Sharon Chertkoff at the SAC at 855-7313.

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction offers content tutoring in courses for specific faculty. The SI Leader, a student who successfully completed the course with the same professor, leads the sessions (3 or 4 a week, each semester) which include review of content area with critical listening and learning strategies. This program combines the effectiveness of group study sessions with individualized tutoring. For further information, check the Supplemental Instruction link or contact Sharon Chertkoff.

Workshops

For more information regarding workshops and for specific times and locations, check the Workshop Link.

Each semester the SAC presents a series of free workshops offering instruction in various learning strategies. Students need not sign up in advance to attend, nor attend every workshop in the series. Since each workshop focuses on a particular strategy topic, students can attend only those they believe will be the most helpful to them.

Non-Credit Program and Services

This service provides at-risk students, those who are on academic probation or on reinstatement, with individual sessions designed to identify and target areas that have contributed to academic problems. Students will participate in and implement self-evaluations and improvement plans geared toward reclaiming good academic standing. For further information, check our Non-Credit Program and Services link or e-mail Sharon Chertkoff.

Outreach Services

The SAC will tailor mini-workshops/presentations that focus on academic learning issues for specific groups of students such as residents living on a given residential hall floor, a sorority or fraternity, a student organization, or a particular college course. To request such services contact Sharon Chertkoff.

Persons wishing to take advantage of any of these free services and/or wanting more detailed information can stop by the SAC or phone 855-7313 or consult our web site: http://www.indiana.edu/~sac/
