Indiana University welcomes Judy Chicago in Residence: From Private to Public An Invitation to Participate |
Judy Chicago is a renowned artist, writer, feminist, and intellectual whose
influence has been far-reaching both within and outside the art community. She
will be visiting Indiana University
Bloomington for the Fall semester of 1999, to teach in conjunction with the
Fine Arts and Gender Studies Departments.
Judy Chicago's ONLY
public lecture and slide presentation at IU this semester will be on
Friday, October 15, from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. at the Fine Arts Auditorium (FA
015)
During her visit, the
Indiana University Art Museum
will be displaying "Trials and Tributes: A Judy Chicago Retrospective"
(Works on Paper) from September 1 - October 31. With viewers of her work
numbering over one million people worldwide, Judy Chicago has achieved a
status rarely reached by women artists. Her retrospective traces
Chicago's career and concerns from the 1960's to the present, including
famous major pieces ("The Dinner Party," "The Birth Project,"
"Powerplay," "The Holocaust Project", "Song of Songs"), showing the full
range of her conceptual arsenal.
Judy Chicago has authored 8 books, most recently a collaboration
with art historian and critic Edward Lucie-Smith entitled, Women and Art:
Contested Territory. Just published by Watson Guptil, this text uniquely
presents images of women by male and female artists: side by side. A
monograph on Judy Chicago (the first monograph ever), authored by
Lucie-Smith, will be available from Watson Guptil in May, 2000. Please
visit the Friends of Art Bookshop in the School of Fine Arts or the gift
shop in the IU Art Museum for more titles by Judy Chicago and posters
of her work.
At the conclusion of her visit, December10-16, works by students in Judy Chicago's IU
classes will be exhibited.
