I370 Scuba Certification Course (2 cr)Description:
Open Water lecture and pool sessions to developel knowledge and skills necessary for internationally recognized PADI Open Water SCUBA Referral, as provided by IU (Valid for 12 months). Referral IU students may complete scuba certification with IU, contingent upon participation on arranged open water evaluation dives.
I270 Intro to Scientific Scuba (past or concurrent). Liability form, Statement of Understanding, and a Medical History Statement for use of scuba are required (with additional clearance from physician, if warranted). Note: asthma is contradictive to use of scuba and you should not breathe compressed air under water without clearance from a physician.
I370 Lab fee of $154 will be assessed at time of registration for lecture and pool sessions.
Class meets for one 75 minute pool session for 5 weeks of the semester. Lectures are arranged throughout the semester.
Develop knowledge of equipment, environments, communication, and related theory of diving, as applied to the open water diving experience. Obtain fundamental skills necessary for safe and enjoyable scuba diving prior to the open water diving experience. During the fall semester, provide open water experience in a controlled manner, as required for PADI Open Water scuba certification, or provide student referral.

Class knowledge is conducted primarily through independent study and via IU Oncourse, with arranged lecture discussions. Skill development is conducted through a series of pool lab sessions.
**Students will submit a hard copy of all 5 Knowledge Reviews by hand on scheduled due date.
**4 Quizzes via "Test and Survey" section of Oncourse.
**A final written exam will be administered upon completion of all Knowledge Reviews and Quizzes.
**Confined Water Pool sessions will be held on Fridays during the students registered pool lab time. Please note: these pool sessions are mandatory for scuba certification referral.
SATISFACTORY/FAIL grading for I370. To receive a Referral students must obtain a score of 75% or higher on the final written exam, submit all five knowledge reviews, pass all four quizzes with a score of 100% (via Oncourse course web site), and attend all confined water pool sessions.
Students are allowed 3 absences (pool, discussion, and/or lecture) with no point penalty. However, 4 or more missed sessions are equivalent to an F grade. Exams and pool evaluations must be taken at the scheduled time.
No make-up sessions are granted. This policy includes lecture/pool attendance and examinations.
IU will provide all equipment for the pool sessions.
