E370 Scuba Certification Course (2 cr)

Description:

National scuba certification program for recreational divers. Program includes lecture and pool sessions to enable students to participate in the Openwater qualification dives, for Scuba Certification or Advanced Scuba Certification.

Prerequisites:

E270 Introduction to Scuba, and good health (E270 and E370 may be taken during the same semester).

Fees:

E370 Lab fee of $50 will be assessed at time of registration for lecture and pool sessions. An additional $140 fee will be assessed for optional Openwater dives through Indiana University.

Class Meeting:

Class meets for one 50 minute Lecture and for one 2 hour Lab per week.

Course Objectives:

Develop knowledge of equipment, environments, communication, and related theory of diving, as applied to the open water diving experience. Obtain fundamental skills necessary for safe and enjoyable scuba diving prior to the open water diving experience. Provide open water experience in a controlled manner, as required for national scuba certification, or provide student referral. Advanced Scuba Certification option available with arranged Openwater dives.

Textbook:

PADI Open Water CD Rom and logbook, Adventure in Diving PADI manual.

Class Procedure:

Students will meet during the regular scheduled lecture time. Additionally, students will arrange lecture and pool sessions for completion of the required sessions. These arranged sessions will be limited in size to provide for a better instructor to student ratio. Arranged times will be announced by the instructor. Students must complete all required lecture and pool sessions, final examination, and final pool evaluation, prior to completing the two day Openwater dive experience.

Grading:

S/F grade based on lecture, pool attendance and exams.

Attendance:

Students are allowed a maximum of three (3) absences. Upon a fourth absence, the student has three (3)options:

1) receive a grade of F
2) officially withdraw from the class
3) follow an appeal procedure through your instructor and/or the Elective Program Coordinator

Equipment:

IU will provide all equipment for the pool sessions. However, if students participate in Openwater dives with Indiana University personal mask, fins, snorkel, and wetsuit must be provided by the student.
