FKNMS Shipwreck Trail Key Largo, Florida Dates: Pending 2nd Summer Session

Documentation of submerged cultural and biological resources within the FKNMS with the emphasis on assessment of those resources. Investigation of historic shipwrecks, including the 1942 Benwood, 1733 San Pedro, the 18th century Spanish Anchor, and other significant sites. Prerequisites: Scuba certification or valid IU referral. Field research fee covers research diving, field equipment and certification costs. Tuition, travel, accommodations, food, and optional recreational dives costs are extra. SSI HPER P499 (3 undergraduate credits) or K602 (3 graduate credits) registration required for project participation.

Tropical Island Ecosystems, Grand Cayman Islands. Dates: May 11-19

Developed in cooperation with IU's Office of Overseas Studies the ten day program in Grand Cayman is a hands on introductory course to the natural and cultural heritage of the islands. Bayahibe Preserves, La Romana, Dominican Republic Dates: May 10-17, May 17-24

The intensive field course directed by Dr. Geoffrey Conrad, Director of the Mathers Museum, and Charles Beeker, Director of the Office of Underwater Science, Indiana University, will focus on underwater research assessment techniques as applied to the scientific investigation of the underwater site in the Bayahibe area. Course topics will include scientific diver equipment, photographic documentation, and site mapping techniques. Independent research credits may be available to qualified students with permission of instructor.

La Isabela Shipwreck Project, Dominican Republic Dates: Pending

The intensive field course directed by Dr. Geoffrey Conrad, Director of the Mathers Museum, and Charles Beeker, Director of the Office of Underwater Science, Indiana University, will focus on underwater excavations and mapping of shipwreck sites in Isabela Bay. The project focuses on scientific diver skill development, photographic documentation, and site mapping techniques. Independent research credits may be available to qualified students with permission of instructor.
