R322 Scientific Diver Course (3 cr)

Course Description:
Fundamentals necessary for safe and efficient diving during scientific investigations. Course materials range from diving physics and physiology to performing scientific surveys. Emphasis on knowledge and skills necessary to conduct research diving investigations. Program available to certified divers and non-divers.

Prerequisites:
E270 Introduction to Scuba or National Scuba certification highly recommended. Optional Scuba Certification is available, for additional fees from IU or local dive facilities.

Course Objectives:
Equip university research project participants with fundamental knowledge, skills, and research methodology necessary to conduct scientific investigations on submerged resources.

Train participants in problem management, diving maladies, water safety, and scuba equipment handling as applied to scientific diving.

Provide Scientific Diver training which includes scuba skills, underwater research skills and comprehensive knowledge development as required for research diving participation.

The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving. PADI Openwater Diver CD ROM (for non-certified divers) Additional hand-outs will be distributed during class.

Class Procedure:
Students will be required to meet during the regular scheduled time for Lecture Sessions. Six Scientific diver pool sessions will be arranged, and one optional openwater evaluation dive will be scheduled. Outside contact hours will include various assignments to be submitted via Oncourse.

Grading:
Midterm Exam (20%), Final Exam (40%), Pool skills (10%), Homework Assignments (20%), Attendance (10%).

Additional Requirements:
Students will be required to complete the approved medical examination prior to participation in any Scientific Diver open water sessions. Additional fees for the physical exam are the responsibility of the student participant.
Non-certified students may participate in R322 water activities, but these will be limited, with no use of Scuba. Optional Certification from IU or local dive shops is available for additional fee.
