The 2013 Annual Meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology will take place in the bustling city of Indianapolis, with Indiana University Bloomington serving as core host, together with Indiana State University and Wabash College. Although the growth in membership of our society necessitates our gathering in the state capital, rather than on the Bloomington campus, as we have done when serving as hosts at our 25th anniversary in 1980, and again for our 43rd annual meeting in 1998, our plans are to bring a taste of IU to Indianapolis, via performance ensembles from the African American Arts Institute and the Jacobs School of Music.
Of course, Indianapolis offers many new and exciting opportunities to introduce SEM members to the richness of our state’s cultural and musical treasures. As the birthplace of jazz great Wes Montgomery, and home of Tyscot Records, the oldest existing African American gospel music label, as well as the Eiteljorg Museum of Native American and Western Art, and the world’s largest Children’s Museum, Indianapolis welcomes you to discover its beauty and character as you connect with old and new friends while strolling the city’s White River Walk. The Local Arrangements Committee anticipates your visit with excitement. We welcome you, and our promise is to do everything we can to ensure that SEM 2013 will be the best ever!
