Oil giant ExxonMobil is planning a joint venture with China's state-owned energy company PetroChina, to build a 2,500-mile long gas pipeline across China. This pipeline will allow the Chinese government to transport natural gas reserves from Tibet and East Turkestan to Shanghai and other heavily industrialized cities on China's East Coast. The West-East pipeline will connect with Sebei-Lanzhou pipeline recently built by PetroChina in North Eastern Tibet. Massive infrastructure and resource extraction projects are devastating for Tibet's fragile high-altitude ecosystem and unwanted by most Tibetans. They also facilitate China's population transfer of hundreds of thousands of Han Chinese into Tibet, which the Dalai Lama has identified as the greatest single threat to Tibetans' cultural survival. Finally, this project will allow the Chinese government to exploit Tibet's gas reserves and profit from natural resources which are not rightfully theirs.
