Tenure Guide

In response to the needs of minority and senior women faculty, the Office of Strategic Hiring and Support offers a Tenure Guide. In doing so, we hope to demystify aspects of the tenure process that have daunted women and minority faculty members in the past, and thus ensure a smoother passage.

Diversity in Higher Education: Minority Faculty Representation at the Big Ten Universities [August, 2004]

The purpose of this report is to document recent trends in faculty diversity at Indiana University–Bloomington (IUB) and the other Big Ten institutions, and to identify specific institutional processes that may preclude adequate representation of minorities in tenure-track faculty positions.

The report is based on time series minority faculty data from IUB and other Big Ten schools between the academic years 1999-2000 and 2003-2004. The analysis secton compares cross-sectional department-level minority faculty data for six departments and schools (biology, business, education, English, history, and psychology) at IUB and within the Big Ten universities during the 2001-2002 academic year. The report concludes with an overview of emergent recruiting strategies used to help increase faculty diversity in higher education.

Faculty Hiring and Retention of Minorities and Women Among Midwestern Universities in the CIC (School of Public and Environmental Affairs Master's Research Project) [Spring, 2004]

This study was conducted during the spring 2004 semester by Master's students enrolled in a capstone seminar at Indiana University Bloomington's School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

The main objective of this study was to examine practices in place for the hiring and retention of minority and female faculty at eleven Midwestern universities within the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), and the CIC itself. The report identifies both leading and cutting edge programs and practices developed by these institutions as part of their strategic hiring and retention initiatives.

Analysis of available data indicate that these institutions experienced a growth in total minority and female faculty, as well as a growth in minority faculty group representation between the academic years 1998-1999 and 2002-2003.

Facing the Challenge of Achieving Minority Equity in Faculty Representation [December, 1999]

As the end of the century draws near and as the needs and demands upon higher education continue to change, a commitment to building a diverse faculty, one that resembles more closely the demographics of the nation as a whole, becomes increasingly important. Currently, at national, regional, and local levels, university and college systems are facing the challenges brought on by decreasing resources, shrinking faculty numbers, and increasing enrollment. Institutions of higher education are attempting to find strategic methods of allocating existing resources without damaging important programs and initiatives. Indiana University has responded to these challenges by resolving to become America's New Public University; in order to help meet this goal, IU initiated a review of its existing programs dedicated to minority concerns in the spring of 1998.

20/20 Report [March, 1999]

As IU–Bloomington moves into the 21st century and becomes America's New Public University, greater diversity must be at the core of the institution's goals and values. Recognition of the importance of this situation can be clearly seen in recommendation #20 of the IU Strategic Directions Charter, published in January 1996, which calls for "ensuring that Indiana University reflects the diversity of American society and supports the achievements of minorities in all aspects of university life."
