The Singing Hoosiers Student Philanthropic Association was created by two Singing Hoosiers after a performance at the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington in October of 2011. A simple performance that was nothing out of the ordinary for the Singing Hoosiers was so well-received by the Boys and Girls Club, and we were inspired by the creativity, joy, and desire to perform that the children showed.
Although the Singing Hoosiers have been presented with amazing opportunities and have performed from Bloomington, Indiana to Beijing, China, we realized that not all groups are allotted the support, whether monetarily or community, to be able to experience such things.
A few weeks after our performance at the Boys and Girls Club, the Philanthropic Association went out to Kirkwood Avenue in downtown Bloomington and sang on the sidewalk, raising money in a guitar case for the Performing Arts Programs of the Boys and Girls Club. Thanks to some generous donors, we were able to raise $250 in one night, which was donated immediately to the Performing Arts program of the Boys and Girls Club, helping their choir, dance, theatre, and orchestral programs so they could continue to provide for these great kids. Continuing our support for the Boys and Girls Club, in December the Philanthropic Association also purchased a portrait of Hoagy Carmichael (a Bloomington native) that the children drew as part of the Boys and Girls Club Community Annual Art Auction.
Currently, the SHSPA is working to partner with Greek associations to pay for the children of organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, Middleway House, and Girls, Inc. to attend the 63rd annual Spring Concert in March at no charge. After working with these Greek organizations, the SHSPA will be seeking corporate sponsors so they can expand on their actions, providing support for many more arts programs, and continuing to spread joy through song.
