Public Sociology in Teaching
One part of public sociology in our department is integrating service learning into the classroom. Recently, we held a panel co-sponsored with the Preparing Future Faculty program to discuss how to integrate service learning into the classroom. This can be done through direct service learning where students are actually volunteering at a specific agency and bringing these experiences into the classroom, or project based service learning, examples of which include developing a website for a non-profit or a research project solving a community need. We had a representative from the IU Office of Service Learning, Nicole Schonemann, describe the process of working with community agencies. We also had three instructors describe their experiences with using service learning in the classroom.
