Jelani Ince

I hail from Columbia, MD, which is a suburb of Washington, D.C. I graduated from Wake Forest University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and French Studies. While attending Wake Forest, I conducted an independent research project on the relationship between race and education in higher education, specifically focusing on the experiences of Black male students at Wake Forest. I shed light on the intricacies of their experiences, including those with their professors, amongst each other and other students, and university administration. Furthermore, my intent was to reject common beliefs about this population that perpetuate a culture of homogeneity and to reject the overwhelming amount of deficit-based literacies about them that continually circulate around our social circles, the media, and academia. Therefore, my main research interests are race/ethnicity, education, and stratification and inequality. In my spare time I enjoy swimming, watching movies, reading, and participating in slam poetry events.
