Politics, Economy, and Culture Workshop

The Politics, Economy, and Culture Workshop (PEC) is a network of scholars that meets weekly during spring semesters to discuss work in progress. The scope of PEC is, by design, deliberately broad and inclusive, ranging from work on inequality in comparative and historical perspective to the study of political processes and national states, and from research on collective identity and mobilization to the fields of cultural sociology. Meetings are organized around one or a pair of presentations by Sociology faculty, graduate students (at all stages of study), and visiting speakers, alongside participants from other IU departments or schools. Recent outside speakers include: Edwin Amenta (UC Irvine), Paul Burstein (Washington), Marie-Laure Djelic (ESSEC), Andrew Perrin (North Carolina), Monica Prasad (Northwestern), Jill Quadagno (Florida), Stefan Svallfors (Umeå), Myra Marx Ferree (Wisconsin). In 2007, we welcome back Jason Beckfield (Harvard), John Skrentny (UCSD), and Jocelyn Viterna (Harvard). An additional feature of PEC is the convening of occasional symposia, focusing on a topic of thematic relevance to the Department or Workshop. Past symposia have focused on challenges involved in conducting macro-sociological work, the study of social change, and empirical democratic theory. A 2007 symposium will examine the multi-disciplinary study of inequality. PEC welcomes participation by all sociologists and other interested scholars.
