Yasmiyn Irizarry
Originally from, Newark, NJ via The Ohio State University, Yasmiyn Irizarry is currently a doctoral candidate working on her PhD in Sociology. She completed her MA in Sociology at Indiana University in 2006 and has a minor in research methodology and a Preparing Future Faculty Certificate. Her interests lie in both the areas of education and race and ethnic relations. Specifically, she is interested in both student and teacher outcomes that relate to more stable and productive learning environments. She is also interested in many issues relating to race and ethnicity including racial identification, discrimination, race relations, and racial attitudes. She is currently working on research looking at the influence of No Child Left Behind on teacher efficacy and another paper focusing on African American optimism/pessimism regarding race relations in the US. Yasmiyn completed her qualifying exam in race and ethnicity, with a special focus on critical race theory, the history of race, racial inequality, and the intersection of race and ethnicity as it pertains to Latinos. She currently works as an instructor for Research Methods in Sociology and a Statistic course for the LAMP program. She has also taught Introduction to Sociology and Charts, Graphs and Tables. And she has worked on several major data collection efforts as a supervisor for the Sociological Research Practicum. Yasmiyn is currently an Indiana University Graduate Scholar, has received Honorable Mention from the National Science Foundation, and has also received paper awards from the North Central Sociological Association and the Association of Black Sociologists. She is blessed to be supported throughout her graduate career by her loving husband Anthony Murphy and her 7 year old daughter Alexis.
