Jose Mata

Hello! My name is Jose Mata, but among friends I'm more commonly called Joey. I received my bachelor's degree in 2001 in Sociology and English and World Literature from Pitzer College of the Claremont Colleges in Southern California. Born in the Philippines, I hail from Baldwin Park, a city about 20 miles east of Los Angeles. My primary interests are in the sociology of culture and community and urban sociology and how the two are related to social psychological processes, mental health, and the production of knowledge and identity. Among other projects, my partner in crime (i.e. research partner) Evie Perry and I are currently working on a study of southwest Hoosiers' uses of the cultural construct of place to make sense of the I-69 highway controversy here in the region. When I'm not enjoying the academic life, I enjoy being obnoxiously random, sports, movies, coaching basketball, and smiling and laughing a ridiculous amount.
