School of Education hosts 43rd Paul Munger Conference
The 43rd Paul Munger Conference was held June 19-21, at the W.W. Wright School of Education in Bloomington. Organized by the Office of Professional Development, the Munger Conference provides current and relevant information to youth-serving professionals seeking to improve the effectiveness of their work.
This year’s presentations featured information on: college access, mental health in schools, mental health in the community, current issues in counseling and school psychology, and academic interventions.
The conference also included two keynote addresses. The opening speaker for the conference was Kathleen Cushman, an education author who writes for a national audience about the lives and learning of adolescents. Her address was titled “First in the Family: What students tell us about college access and success.” The speaker during the evening banquet was Dr. Sue Whiston, a professor in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology at IU. Her keynote address was titled “Priorities and Pulls: Decisions in Working with Youth,” which addressed how school counselors, psychologists and community agency counselors can examine the needs of youth and find methods for more effectively addressing those needs through collaboration.
This year’s conference included the continued collaboration with the Indiana Pathways to College Network, as well as a new collaboration with the Child, Adolescent, Family Intervention Science Initiative (CAFISI). These collaborations helped expand the number of participants, said conference director Catherine Gray.
