The Indiana School of Education honored some of the best teachers in Indiana schools and within the school of education during the annual “Celebration of Teaching” Thursday, April 26. The school recognized seven school teachers from across the state selected as this year’s “Armstrong Teacher Educators.” It also awarded a school of education professor using innovative techniques to address the issues of English and a second language with the Gorman Teaching Award.

Language Education professor Faridah Pawan is the recipient of the Gorman Teaching Award. It is the highest teaching award presented by the school. The school presents it to recognize creative and effective teaching. Since Pawan joined the IU School of Education faculty in 2001, she’s created the state’s largest in-service training for English as a second language teachers. In 2002, she started the English as a Foreign language/English as a second Language Program via Distance Education. Students from Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, as well as South and East Asia have taken five online courses to earn a certificate of completion. The Gorman Award, established by alum Burton Gorman in the early 1980’s, carries a cash prize.
