Surface Structures: Recent Work by Martha MacLeish

The School of Fine Arts (SoFA) Gallery at Indiana University is proud to present Surface Structures, an exhibition of new work by Martha MacLeish. This exhibition will open Friday, October 16 and continue through Friday, November 20, 2009. The Opening Reception will be Friday, October 16, 6:30-8:30pm in the SoFA Gallery. MacLeish will give a gallery talk about her work Friday, November 13, at Noon. All events are free and open to the public.
Surface Structures features curvilinear wall constructions that represent an idea about universal experiences. MacLeish’s sculptures originate through painting, working to isolate the spatial quirks and ambiguities that she finds so compelling in painting, and understanding how these can be experienced as forms that inhabit our space. McLeish also investigates how the strong, localized color of the plastics she uses can be made to behave more lithely through optical mixture of stripes and through the overlay of transparent shadows as the forms bend in space. Her use of materials encourages associations with amorphous thought or ephemeral gestures. MacLeish creates forms that animate our life experiences, creating a sense of vitality and movement, at times comic or melodramatic.
Martha MacLeish is currently the head of the Fundamentals Studio at the Henry Radford School of Fine Arts. She recently exhibited in New York, Chicago, Montreal and other venues. MacLeish received her MFA in painting from Yale University School of Art.
