Contemporary Jeweller Brings New Botanicals to the SoFA Gallery
October 22, 2007 at 7:00 pmAmong the internationally recognized artists exhibiting work in Field of Vision is Australian contemporary jeweller Julie Blyfield, whose work gives new perspective on the native flora and fauna of Australia while also highlighting the intricate fusion of texture and detail. Blyfield’s work reveals to the viewer an inseparable connection between natural history and art, and all the implications along the way. Spiky Desert Plant (pictured above, right) represents a plant that grows in the artist’s home country, yet the vessel speaks to an international audience.
The technique used in the Field of Vision work is known as chasing, where Blyfield “work[s] the annealed metal with fine steel tools to texture and create surface pattern.” The artist says that she takes pleasure in “the way the annealed metal moves and shifts as it is work hardened with the small steel chasing tools when I develop the asymmetrical organic forms.” Blyfield’s care and delight in her work is evident, and the result is extraordinary. Her work will be on display at SoFA gallery through November 17th.
