Hoosiers express their thoughts on Democracy

An exciting installation Writing on the Wall will be on display this month at IU’s SoFA Gallery. A collaborative art project envisioned by Joe LaMantia, a longtime Bloomington community artist, SoFA Gallery Director Betsy Stirratt and IU's Office of the Vice Provost for Research, Writing on the Wall promises to engage as well as stir dialog amongst visitors.

The project, which began this fall and continues into Spring 2008, is giving Hoosiers the opportunity to "tag" large mural walls with their personalized thoughts, ideas, and feelings about democracy and the world in which we live. The walls will travel to each of IU’s campuses, and will be featured in an elaborate exhibition at SoFA. Also featured are photographs and a video of the project, as well as work from five graffiti artists invited to respond to the question “What is Democracy? What does it mean to you?

“Writing on the Wall” is part of IU's Moveable Feast of the Arts Program, and will also be featured in IU’s ArtsWeek 2008 (February 20 – March 1, 2008). A panel discussion featuring local and state representatives will be held Friday, February 29 from 5.30-7pm in the gallery, with a reception to follow from 7 – 8 pm.
